I grew up in Barrio Hollywood, Tucson, AZ. I am half xicana and a proud descendant of the Pascua Yaqui tribe. I am also half Palestinian. My heritage is one of struggle and resilience in the face of adversity, but also of rich wisdom and culture. I am incredibly grateful to my family, my ancestors and my community for imparting upon me their knowledge and strength.
My goals in research are to cultivate my scientific outlook and to strengthen the critical thinking skills necessary for pursuing a career centered around learning and discovery in the biomedical field. I want to make meaningful contributions to the scientific community, which has fostered my personal and academic growth. I hope to help other students like me to find their path in STEM. I mentor freshman from Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). I also volunteer at the local Emergency Department in Flagstaff Medical Center. This opportunity has shown me how hard those who respond to medical emergencies work and how important their work is. It has been amazing to see and work alongside the kind, admirable staff at this hospital.
In my career, I will work to improve the quality of life and healthcare for those I encounter. I want to ameliorate barriers in healthcare, both individual and systemic, that prevent people from receiving the best care available. My work in redox biology with regards to human health will help me to better understand longevity, disease and interactions with the environment. Ultimately, I hope to be a part of solutions that positively impact the world and those around me.
